The Palestinian community in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has depended upon the services of Makassed Islamic Charitable Society Hospital, a long-term UPA partner, since its founding in 1968.

MakassedHospital is currently facing a financial crisis due to the influx of patients caused by the recent escalation in violence in Jerusalem and is in need of immediate funds to continue to offer medical services to Palestinians who could not otherwise afford them.

UPA’s support dates back to 1985, in the form of a major grant ($2.5 million) to build the Makassed Nursing College.  Still in operation today, the College graduates 30 nurses a year.

Services at Makassed Hospital are constantly in high demand. The hospital is the major secondary and tertiary referral hospital for difficult and complicated cases from the West Bank and Gaza Strip.  It provides a range of specialties including: internal medicine, orthopedics, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, plastic surgery and open heart surgery.

Operated under the auspices of the Makassed Islamic Charitable Society, the hospital is committed to offering subsidized fees to low income patients. This commitment to provide quality healthcare to all Palestinians regardless of means is particularly important to preserve at this time.
