The Department of Radiology at Makassed Hospital is considered one of the most developed departments on a national level, both from the point of view of its distinguished medical staff and of the availability of the devices, as it contains most medical imaging equipment necessary for diagnostic purposes and surgical intervention, which include among others conventional and computerized X-Ray machines, computed tomography (CT) scan devices, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device, and ultrasonography or ultrasound devices.
The department possesses the following devices:
- Conventional X-ray machine.
- Fluoroscopy device.
- Spiral CT scan.
- Multi-slice CT scan.
- Multi-slice CT scans 64 for vascular and cardiac catheterization.
- Ultrasound & Colour Doppler Ultrasound “Vascular & Nonvascular”.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging device (MRI).
- Panoramic Dental X-ray device.
It is also important to note that the Department of Radiology annually performs a large number of interventional surgical radiology procedures, such as:
- Different types of Biopsies
- Abscess Drainage
Approximately 40000 different types of X-rays are taken each year.
Working in the Department of Radiology is a team of specialists and technicians who are highly-qualified, highly-experienced, and highly-competent. The medical staff consists of 3 specialized radiologists, including Dr. Tawfiq Al Jundi (head of the department) and Dr. Mahmoud Awad, as well as 11 X-ray and medical imaging technicians who are all highly-qualified and carrying BS or MS university degrees. The department is also staffed with a number of experienced nurses and a secretarial office.
Makassed is the only hospital in Palestine to train physicians in diagnostic radiology. In fact, the department provides a medical teaching and training program in this specialization, recognized by the Medical Palestinian Board, for Palestinian doctors wishing to specialize in this field, and currently there are a few such resident doctors.
The Department of Radiology teaches and trains medical students and resident doctors from the School of Medicine at Al Quds University, and students from the School of Medical Professions / Department of Medical Imaging and Nursing, in addition to students specializing in Medical Secretariat studies.
