On 20 June 2017, Mr. Jason Greenblatt, US President Donald Trump’s Special Representative for International Negotiations, visited Makassed Islamic Charitable Society Hospital on the sidelines of a Ramadan Iftar (break-fast) banquet held for children patients and their companions by the Hospital in cooperation with the US Consulate General in Jerusalem.
Makassed CEO Dr. Rafiq Husseini and Dr. Bassam Abu Libdeh, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, escorted Mr. Greenblatt and Mr. Donald Blome, US Consul General, on a tour of the Hospital’s various departments, briefing the guests on their latest developments and medical achievements particularly with regards to the pediatric cardiac surgery department, the neonatal unit, the cardiothoracic surgery department and others.
Dr. Husseini also briefed the American envoy on the financial crisis facing the Hospital, as well as the difficulties, restrictions and obstacles imposed by the Israeli occupation forces, which often prevent patients and medical staff from reaching Makassed.
Dr. Husseini expressed his appreciation for Mr. Greenblatt’s visit to Makassed and for his interest in learning about the Hospital’s departments and their achievements, and valued the American Consulate’s initiative to set up a Ramadan Iftar banquet, thus bringing cheer and joy to the hearts of the sick children patients during this holy month.
Mr. Greenblatt concluded the visit by promising to provide aid and assistance to Makassed Hospital and to seek a solution to the financial and logistical crises that the Hospital is continuously suffering from.
